《Design Miami》 Exhibition at DDP in Seoul

Presented at Design Miami, The head of SWNA, Sukwoo Lee’s 9.8m/s² begins with gravity—an invisible force that continuously pulls every object toward the center of the Earth. Gravity forms a fundamental order of nature while acting as an unseen designer that shapes the form and structure of things. Lee extends this physical principle into a metaphor for the invisible forces embedded within society, institutions, and conventions—structures that we often accept without question. For this iteration, Lee reinterprets the existing 9.8m/s² series through light using 3M Light String. Delicate lines of light are set against the rough materiality of the structure, revealing the tension between gravity pulling downward and tensile forces resisting it. Custom sockets were designed and milled specifically for the work, accompanied by material experiments to withstand the heat generated by the light source. Through the relationship between light and matter, 9.8m/s² explores a momentary state of equilibrium between attraction and resistance, conformity and opposition.
