Drop Light for Fritz Hansen 150th Anniversary Exhibition
2023 Objects

The Drop Light was created for the Korea Project at the Fritz Hansen 150th Anniversary Exhibition in Seoul. Designer Sukwoo Lee investigated the intersection of his design preferences, Korean aesthetics, and Fritz Hansen, emphasizing straight lines, curves, contrast, and balance while reflecting on the theme of 'Eternal Beauty.'

It is a three-dimensional interpretation of flat characteristics that investigates the relationship between lines and planes to balance straight lines and curves. The design does not directly borrow from traditional Korean sculpture, but rather incorporates the designer's personal concerns, as he grew up in Korean culture, and reinterprets them with a contemporary perspective.

The light expresses the three-dimensional changes of intersecting lines, and the initial sketches focused on exploring 2D sculpture. Through various experiments and prototypes, two forms of the drop light were finally designed. The shade, which features a fluid transition of curves and planes, is combined with a solid wood in the form of a column, creating a delicate and harmonious sculpture.
