Hanji Furniture Design for Maison&Objet
2026
Thin and flexible, hanji can be folded, torn, and layered to create new textures. It responds to forces of pulling and pressing, becoming taut or forming soft, curved surfaces. Focusing on these material qualities, the design brings hanji together with solid, weighty materials such as metal and stone to express the tension and balance that emerge when contrasting materials meet. Hanji transmits light without fully revealing what lies beyond, and it changes flexibly in response to external forces. Through these qualities, it creates new boundaries and intervals between space and objects. The project explores the potential of hanji to expand into new structural and sculptural forms within contemporary interiors and furniture design.
