This project is a design study that reinterprets Korea’s traditional jang (fermented sauce) culture within the context of modern residential environments.
“Onggi of Wind” was redesigned to allow the use of outdoor earthen jars indoors by adapting their natural ventilation and cooling properties. “Onggi of Mountain” applies the gyeop-ogari technique that utilizes water, offering a modern interpretation of Korean aesthetics and craftsmanship.
Additionally, “Well Containers 1 and 2” were designed to incorporate modern convenience, enabling fermented sauces to be easily stored and used in refrigerators or on dining tables. Based on the materiality and fermentation principles of traditional onggi, this project harmonizes functionality and form, presenting a contemporary interpretation of Korea’s enduring craft tradition.
